Vintage photography gives us a glimpse into the past, and helps to allow people to gain some understanding of the world before us. Unlike many of the collections that are considered the staples of art collection, vintage photographs are truly a unique exploration of the recent past, and many eras of the current civilization have come to contribute their share of what makes up vintage photography. Though not the largest grouping of auctioned materials of artistic value, they are still valued for their recollections of past events, and even items relating to vintage modes of photography are included in the auctioning of these things.

Give a child a camera and you have given them a time machine which will create wonders and may, at some time in the future, be considered family treasures. Expect that, at first, film will just be used quickly in order to see the pictures, but be patient, this will soon be over and selectivity will begin to be shown.
You will undoubtedly be treated to some early shots of grandma as a headless wonder, but these will also be accompanied by some unexpected jewels. As the young photographer learns more about his or her new hobby and why grandma’s head was not in the picture, skills will begin to develop and you will start to see a legend of the world through the eyes of a six year old, or whatever age your young photographer is, begin to emerge.

The interest in aerial photography has a long history. Even before men could take photographs high above the earth they were drawing images as they imagined the land to appear from above.
THE HISTORY OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
The first person to take a picture from above the earth was the French author and artist Felix Tournachon, also known as Nadar. He took his first picture from a balloon which was tethered to the earth over the Bievre Valley in 1858.
Aerial photography played an important part in creating accurate maps and planning military movements. In 1902 the French army used both regular kites and an air filled balloon to obtain shots of enemy standings.
HOW AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY CHANGED
Manned and unmanned balloons, kites and eventually gliders were the first transporters to take pictures from on high. Arthur Batut used kites to take aerial photographs in the 1880's and the use of kites in aerial photography has continued virtually unchanged over the course of time – of course, the equipment has improved, but the basic principles continue to draw interest from hobbyists and aerial photography enthusiasts.
With advances in technology the ability to use remote controlled aircraft was added to the group. Associations for aerial photography – whether kite, glider or remote controlled – can be found all over North America and other parts of the world. These forms of taking aerial photography are also used by Universities and others for scientific research in Earth Sciences.
Obviously the advances continued with the creation of satellite imaging, however, hobbyists and scientists continue to make use of, and enjoy, the art of taking aerial photographs with their own equipment.
HOW ARE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN?
The concept is quite basic. A camera is attached to a kite, balloon, glider or remote controlled aircraft. It is then set on a timer to take photographs at regular intervals. Photos can also be taken with a remote controlled operation which is used by the operator or ground crew.
It is important to know that there are guidelines you are required to follow when taking aerial photographs. In particular there are restrictions on using kites or other items which are tethered to the ground after sunset unless the object and its line are properly lighted.

For example, one of the most striking wedding images is a black and white photo of a bride and groom. The bride is holding a bouquet of roses. If you are an American photographer, it is important to stay on top of your field, as it is in any area. Although it is possible to study photography quite successfully with no regard for the traditions or conventions of your time, getting a subscription to at least one American photo magazine can really help. I know. I am a professional photographer myself, and like many in my field, I like to think of myself as an artist first, and a professional second. I do do photography of weddings and other events to pay the bills, however I thought that since I do not intend to spend my whole career as a commercial photographer, I could get by on what I knew as an artist. But once I subscribed to my first American photo magazine, I was quite surprised. I did not really realize how much I was missing out on in terms of professional development until I first thumbed through my American photo magazine, and saw that I was falling seriously behind in my chosen profession.
There is not much for non photographers in American photo magazines, but some of them do have fascinating pictures which you can look at and enjoy for their artistic merit. My wife reads my American photo magazine all of the time, even though she has no interest in pictures except for their aesthetic quality. She can pick up a copy of my American photo magazine and thumb through it for hours just looking at the high quality, glossy prints and marveling at the talents of the artists inside. There is nothing like looking at an American photo magazine to really give you a new way of seeing the world around you. Whether there are pictures of nature or of humans, the images in an American photo magazine will allow you the benefits of looking at the world with an artists eye, and those benefits are substantial. Anything that gives you a new perspective on the world is, in my opinion, invaluable, and so if you get the chance to open up your eyes wider through looking at art, you should really take that opportunity. For this reason, I do not only read my American photo magazine, but also read trade magazines of writers, musicians, and cinematographers, since the input of creative people of any field can be a great asset to all of us.

Many people think that pictures of animals are just for children, but boy are they all mistaken. They might look at cute animal photos when they are small, but as they grow, they assume that, like cuddly stuffed bears, these pictures of animals are best left to childhood. Oh sure, trying to be cute, their boss might leave animal photos up around the office as a pleasant, if boring decoration, but no one ever thinks about these pictures at all. I really do think that this is a great shame. As a professional animal photographer, it should be no surprise that I like animal photos, but the reasons might be things that you have never thought about.
One of the greatest things about animal photos is that they really can capture any emotion that you can think about. People are often reserved about showing what is going on inside them, but reserve is not really anything that shows up too frequently among the members of the animal kingdom. In animal photos, we have the chance to see practically any emotion, from the tenderness of a mother cat caring for her young, to the fierceness of a lion pouncing for the kill, to the sly disdain of a baboon, leaving its friends behind for new fun. Many people believe that we are not really seeing these expressions in animal photos, and that what we are seeing is just a reflection of our own emotions that we want to pin on animals, but anyone who has spent any time with animals at all knows that this is simply not true. When we look at animal photos, we are looking out at our own emotions, not because we put them there, but because animals are really very strikingly similar to us. Dogs really do feel loyalty and friendliness quite often. You can tell if you have a pet dog what the expressions in dog animal photos really mean. Cats really are quite evil and sneaky, not because their tiny, creepy eyes look that way in animal photos, but because that is their natural temperament. Animals are less intelligent than we are, and are more driven by instinct, but that does not change the fact that they feel real emotions the same as we do. It does not take animal photos to show most of us the truth of this statement, but looking at pictures of animals can help to confirm it again and again.

The continent of Africa is one of the richest in the world in terms of resources, richness of culture, and variety of wild life, although it remains among the poorest in terms of the standard of living in which its people have to live. Outside of Africa photos in National Geographic, few people ever get the opportunity to explore this unique continent, this land of desert and lush jungles. Yet Africa photos alone fail to capture the majesty of Africa. It is not all just people dancing around with spears and wild animals leaping across the plains. Things like National Geographic tend to reinforce stereotypes with their Africa wildlife photos, and their tribal photos, and ignore the other side of Africa.
Nonetheless, as any fan of Africa photos knows, this exotic side is one of the greatest draws there is and is what bring many people – perhaps most tourists – to the continent. As a photojournalist, I have spent many months taking photos of Africa in between my wider travels in Europe and Asia, and I can tell you that there is an air of excitement to the land that is completely unlike anywhere else where I have ever traveled. The Africa photos just do not begin to capture all of the sites, sounds, and textures of this rich continent. The dryness of the deserts, the heat of the North, and the richness of peoples, cultures, and languages can simply not be captured. They are all things which I simply can not include in any of my Africa photos no matter how I try, thing which must be experienced first hand by a traveler, even if only for a little while, and only as a tourist.
Many of the Africa photos which I take are not African tribal photos, but rather, pictures of the cities and the people who live there. I will not claim that my African pictures present a truer vision of Africa then the photos that you might see in some world traveler magazine, but they are certainly part of the picture. What is the true Africa? The ancient land portrayed in the Africa photos which everyone has seen in magazines, or the modern, cosmopolitan Africa which I am working so hard to portray. Honestly, like anywhere, the truth lies somewhere in between. But no matter what you think, the Africa photos alone never tell the whole story without the viewer.

Whether you are going out into nature to photograph a great sunrise, a phenomenal river or to capture some other wonder of nature or if you are going to an urban area to get photos that tell the story of a people, the safari nature of the trip is the same. The first thing to do if you want to make money from photos is learn how to take great ones. In the world of commercial photography clarity sells. The subject of how to take a good photo is too comprehensive for one article, however the following is important:
· Have a decent camera.
· Know how to use it.
· Have an eye for detail and colour.
· Be ready to grab an opportunity when it presents itself.
If you happen to be driving through the hills of Scotland and come across a lone piper (or even two), grab that camera. Watch for sunsets, moonrise, cloud formations and tree shapes. Keep a sharp eye on your pet for unusual poses, and visit your florist every so often. Flower pictures are surely many photographers’ bread and butter and they can be photographed in the light on your windowsill. Greeting card markets love photos of flowers, gardens and pets doing something unusual. Wildlife and nature are great for calendars and geographic magazines and educational markets.
Diversity is the keyword for topics in photography. The wider the range of topics you cover, the more likely you will be to get a sale. Anyone can make a good living from stock photos. Freelance photographer Lee Frost (UK) sells just as many photos taken from his own backyard as from exotic and far-flung locations. In fact he sold a pic of the dandelions in his garden to a natural health book. But if you love travelling, put your holidays to work for you. Travel guides, brochures and websites could be possible markets for your photos.
So what to do with that fantastic shot? The edges are sharp enough to cut with, while the clarity would bring tears of joy to many publishers. The main thing to aim for with any photo is to sell it to multiple markets. This is taken care of if you submit to a photo library. You don’t have to be responsible for selling your own stuff then, but since the word is ‘diversify’ aim to do both. Offer it to non-competing markets over several years, since you are not selling the copyright.
It is important for any photographer to keep a portfolio of his work to show. You never know when you’ll meet a prospective buyer who wants to look at your work and they will not be impressed if you have to rummage through a dusty desk to scrape them together. When you do score a sale, don’t charge a pittance just because the picture only took a few minutes of your time. You’ve spent years learning your craft and your photos are worth a decent figure.
If you really know what you are talking about and can take a fantastic shot, think of submitting it to a photographic magazine, along with all the details of the precise equipment you used and a step-by step account of your procedure. A bit of a challenge maybe, but worth the effort. There are many other markets to consider too; all kind of magazines, newspapers, catalogues, travel brochures and books. So grab that camera and start shooting.
